Italian-born, Norway-based guitarist Demetrio “Dimitry” Scopelliti has long carved out his place in the progressive and instrumental metal world. With decades of touring under his belt, international recognition as both performer and innovator, and collaborations with legends like Marty Friedman and the Bissonette Brothers, Scopelliti has earned his reputation as a guitar virtuoso. His upcoming release, The Revolution of Evolution (out September 21, 2025 on FusionCore Records), marks what he considers his most complete artistic statement to date—a ten-track instrumental odyssey fully written, performed, and produced by the man himself.
Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, The Revolution of Evolution is packed with tight harmonies, mathematically complex rhythms, and cinematic intensity. From the opening track “Undercurrent,” Scopelliti demonstrates his ability to make his guitar not just play, but speak. “Singularity” unfolds in layers—fast rhythms dissolving into melodic accents—while “In the Air” swells with a kind of dramatic sadness that borders on inspiration before it crashes into heavier textures.
For me personally, not being a big prog-metal instrumental fan, this kind of album takes effort to listen to. It’s dense, highly technical, and constantly shifting. Fans of the genre will absolutely thrive on that complexity. I admit I sometimes find it tiring—but then a track like “La Macchina di Kadavus” or “Pulse” cuts through, and suddenly I’m hooked. Those songs stand out with a fresher, more exotic flavor, accessible even to listeners outside the inner circle of guitar-tech devotees.
That’s an important point about Scopelliti: yes, he’s technical—undeniably so—but he also deeply understands the art of songcraft. He has said before that his technicality is never for its own sake, but always at the service of the song. While I don’t always hear it that way myself, his integrity as a composer and performer is clear, and it’s exactly why his peers place him in the same echelon as names like Satriani or Beck.
The Revolution of Evolution is not background music. It demands your attention, pulling you into its intricate layers, and it rewards those who have the patience and passion to go there. For prog metal fans, it’s going to be a feast. For listeners like me, who lean toward simpler or more melodic forms, it may feel overwhelming at times—but even then, it’s impossible not to respect the mastery, the years of work, and the sheer artistry behind it.
Whether or not it’s “your bag,” Demetrio “Dimitry” Scopelliti has proven once again that he’s an artist who pushes forward, refusing to stagnate. The Revolution of Evolution is exactly that: a bold evolution of his own voice, and a revolution in modern instrumental metal guitar.
