Career

Born James Richard Garoppolo in Arlington Heights, Illinois, he played college football at Eastern Illinois before New England drafted him in the second round in 2014, where he spent three seasons behind Tom Brady. Traded to San Francisco in 2017, he became the starter and had the best run of his career, leading the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV after the 2019 season. Over six seasons there he threw for 13,599 yards, 82 touchdowns, and 42 interceptions, before injuries and Brock Purdy’s emergence pushed him out of the job.

He spent 2023 with the Las Vegas Raiders, was released the following offseason, then signed with the Los Angeles Rams as Matthew Stafford’s backup. Across 12 seasons he’s appeared in 85 games, completing 67.4% of his passes for 15,828 yards, 96 touchdowns, and 52 interceptions, earning roughly $156 million over his career. His role shrank sharply in his last two Rams seasons — just three appearances in 2025 with no pass attempts behind a healthy Stafford, after starting the 2024 finale (27-of-41, 334 yards, two touchdowns).

Entering 2026 as a free agent, Garoppolo told people close to him he was weighing retirement after 12 seasons. The Rams reportedly wanted him back but said they’d let him take his time deciding, and with the team drafting a quarterback in the first round, his path back to Los Angeles has narrowed. As of mid-2026 reports, he’s said he’d be open to playing somewhere in the right situation, but no deal has been announced.
